7.1 Introduction

3D printing techniques are disruptive in the way they enable the fabrication of products and shapes with a complexity that could not have been imagined some years ago. The potential of 3DP is boosted by the characteristic of these technologies being natively digital, i.e. born after the third industrial revolution and the advent of the personal computer. The intricate shapes are generated layer-wise directly from the digital 3D model of the object with one machine and without the need for specific production tools, such as moulds or dies (Calignano et al. 2017). On the one hand, the absence of tools reduces the economic lot size to the single unit; on the other hand, it empowers the sustainability of the manufacturing route for several reasons. There are different aspects to be considered when addressing the sustainability associated with the adoption of 3DP. These are not limited to the process only, but also to the product performances and its design. The topic of 3DP sustainability has received increasing attention from researchers in the last few years and a relevant number of works on different aspects is available in the literature to date. A short description of this multifaceted topic is provided in the first part of this chapter. Subsequently, a review of the literature is presented and a cradle-to-grave approach for the environmental impact assessment of powder bed technologies for metal parts is proposed at the end of the chapter.
